Backup & Restore Engineer – Automation (m/f/diverse)

Your tasks

• Designing, implementing, and maintaining monitoring for backup and recovery systems, including dashboards, alerting, and reporting.
• Continuously developing and improving automation for backup and restore processes using Python, Ansible, REST, and GraphQL APIs.
• Working with Rubrik and Versity/ScoutAM for data backup and long-term retention; supporting the rollout and integration of Rubrik in the cloud.
• Supporting architects and senior engineers in designing backup and recovery solutions and implementing automation patterns.
• Assisting in gathering and analyzing requirements; providing technical input on backup and restoring solutions and supporting their implementation.
• Monitoring backup jobs and systems, analyzing errors, and driving incident resolution to maintain stable operations.
• Participating in performance tuning and optimization of backup and recovery environments regarding availability, performance, disaster recovery, and security.
• Contributing to proof-of-concept activities and evaluations of new backup technologies and solutions.
• Maintaining and updating technical documentation related to backup and recovery procedures, configurations, monitoring, and automation scripts.
• Collaborating closely with architects, system administrators, and application teams to ensure effective backup and restore strategies.
• Providing out-of-hours and on-call support in exceptional cases.

Your Profile

• Solid experience in enterprise data backup, ideally with Rubrik and Versity/ScoutAM.
• Good understanding of agent-based backup concepts (e.g., Exchange, MS SQL, Oracle) and snapshot-based backup and restore.
• Knowledge of Bare Metal Restore (BMR) concepts is a plus.
• Good knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows operating systems.
• Familiarity with ITIL-based IT service management processes is an advantage.
• Very good knowledge of Python programming language.
• Very good knowledge of implementing REST and GraphQL APIs; experience with the Rubrik GraphQL API and ServiceNow API is a strong advantage.
• Very good knowledge of software lifecycle.
• Strong knowledge of Ansible for automation and configuration management.
• Good analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Proactive mindset and willingness to drive improvements.

As a Backup & Restore Engineer – Automation, you will design, implement, and continuously enhance automation and monitoring for our enterprise-wide backup and recovery environment, ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient protection of business‑critical data.

You will work in an infrastructure team with a strong API-first mindset and a clear focus on end-to-end automation. Our target is to automate backup and recovery processes as much as possible, leveraging scripting, configuration management, and modern APIs. A key strategic initiative is the rollout of Rubrik in the cloud, integrating cloud-native capabilities into our backup and recovery landscape and supporting Commerzbank’s broader digital and cloud transformation.
