Mutanda Mining (MUMI S.A.R.L) is a mining company whose registered office is at No. 4746, Avenue Laurent Désiré Kabila, Mutoshi District, Manika Commune, City of Kolwezi. Its operating headquarters, the center of its main activities, is located about 42 km from the city of Kolwezi in the province of Lualaba in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Main objectives of the position

Under the direct supervision of the Hydrogeology Superintendent, the Senior Hydrologist is responsible for leading and managing surface water and stormwater management activities to support safe and efficient open pit mining operations.

The incumbent provides technical leadership in hydrology, drainage infrastructure, dewatering planning, water management strategies, and monitoring systems while ensuring compliance with Glencore policies, MUMI SAFEWORK V2 requirements, and environmental standards.

Minimum qualification

• Bachelor's degree in Hydrology, Structural Geology, Civil Engineering, Water Resources Management, or a related discipline.
• A Master's degree or postgraduate qualification in Hydrology, Civil Engineering, or Water Resources Management is an added advantage.
• Professional registration as an Engineer or Scientist is desirable.

Required Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in surface water and stormwater management within a mining or civil engineering environment.
• Experience in tropical mining operations is highly desirable.
• Experience in the design and construction of sumps, drainage channels, culverts, and stormwater infrastructure.
• Practical experience in groundwater monitoring, drill hole planning, near-mine exploration, and dewatering systems.
• Knowledge of pump sizing, pipe flow calculations, and pump station operations.
• Previous experience with geological core logging is advantageous.
• Experience supervising technical teams in operational mining environments.

Required skills

• Strong technical expertise in hydrology, groundwater and surface water management.
• Knowledge of hydrological modelling, fluid dynamics, and water resource management.
• Ability to develop groundwater and surface water management plans.
• Experience establishing monitoring systems and interpreting hydrological data.
• Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
• Experience using mining and geological software such as Surpac, Deswik, and hydrogeological databases.
• Ability to develop standards, procedures, and technical guidelines.
• Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
• High level of integrity, accountability, and commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement short-, medium-, and long-term surface water and stormwater management strategies to support safe and efficient mining operations.
• Design and optimize dewatering systems, including sumps, drainage channels, culverts, berms, and associated infrastructure.
• Monitor groundwater and surface water conditions and assess their impact on pit stability and mining operations.
• Develop, maintain, and continuously improve hydrological monitoring networks and data collection systems.
• Analyze hydrological data and provide technical recommendations to support mine planning and operational decision-making.
• Collaborate with hydrogeologists, geotechnical engineers, mine planning teams, environmental specialists, consultants, and contractors on water management projects.
• Support the planning, installation, and monitoring of groundwater monitoring infrastructure.
• Manage stormwater drainage systems and continuously improve water management practices as mining activities progress.
• Lead technical studies and hydrological modelling to optimize mine water management and operational performance.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, cost optimization, and operational efficiency within hydrology and drainage systems.
• Supervise, coach, and develop Hydrology Technicians and Hydrology Assistants while driving performance through effective goal setting and performance management.
• Prepare departmental budgets relating to hydrology infrastructure, monitoring networks, and water management projects.
• Ensure compliance with Glencore standards, MUMI SAFEWORK V2 requirements, environmental legislation, and company policies.
• Maintain accurate hydrological records, monitoring databases, QA/QC documentation, and technical reports.
• Prepare technical reports and present hydrological findings to support mining, environmental, and project teams.
• Comply with Glencore's environmental management requirements and procedures as well as MUMI SARL's environmental policy.
