Engineering Director | Engineering, AI & Data | Melbourne 

Join our Engineering, AI & Data Azure Practice in Melbourne and lead the engineering agenda for a growing practice in a market you can genuinely shape. You'll be trusted to walk into a client's most complex technology problem, lead the team delivering it, and own the outcome and the client relationship. Your work will have a real impact on our society.

Engineering, AI & Data is around 1,200 people nationally, and this role will continue to play a part in shaping it. We want local leadership with the reach of a national practice. 

What will your typical day look like? 

An Engineering Director at Deloitte shapes, sells, and delivers engineering work, leading through others while staying close enough to engagements that your technical judgement stays current. 

Your day-to-day responsibilities may include: 

• Own strategic client relationships across one or more accounts. Be the senior technical voice our clients trust. 

• Maintain and grow a high-performing team people want to stay in. 

• Lead delivery at scale through your engineering teams across AI, cloud, integration, and custom software development, working hand in hand with the engagement lead, or managing this yourself. 

• Identify, shape, and sell engineering work. 

• Champion AI-native ways of working and turn what works into reusable patterns, skills, plugins, harnesses, and processes. 

• Step in early when an engagement, a client relationship, or the firm's reputation is at risk. 

• Hold the quality bar on what your teams deliver, including leveraging trustworthy AI. 

• Bring in the rest of the firm, industry and domain experts, and our alliance partners, and build integrated teams around client problems. 

About the team 

Deloitte's Engineering, AI & Data team helps organisations design, build, and scale modern technology solutions that solve meaningful business problems. The team works across cloud platforms, software engineering, data, and AI to deliver complex transformation programs in sectors where reliability and trust matter. 

You'll be part of a collaborative and high-performing team that values strong engineering practices, critical thinking and problem-solving, continuous learning, and the thoughtful application of AI to improve delivery outcomes.

For this role, we're hiring for leadership, judgement, communication, and the ability to deliver through ambiguity at scale. 

• You articulate the problem before solving it, defining constraints and trade-offs before reaching for a solution. 

• You're client-led, not technology-led, proposing solutions based on the client's real needs rather than a technology you already have in mind. 

• You simplify complexity, turning something genuinely complex into the brief an executive actually needs. 

• You think in a structured way, finding patterns and applying principles to create certainty even when information is incomplete and the pressure is on. 

• You care, build trust, and the work follows. Clients bring you their hardest problems because they trust you, and you spot the opportunity in those conversations, shape it into something credible, and convert it. 

• You lead through others, at scale, setting direction, delegating real ownership, keeping teams engaged, upholding best practice, and managing technical and delivery trade-offs across several engagements at once. 

• You use AI wisely, pushing AI-enabled, accelerated ways of working across your teams, while you and your team fully own the outcome. 

• You grow people, and you're still growing yourself, giving straight feedback, investing in capability, and building an inclusive team where people do their best work, while continuing to invest in your own technical and soft skills. 

Technical baseline 

• Significant experience leading engineering teams and large, complex technical delivery - measured by scope and impact. 

• Deep, current, hands-on credibility in Azure, with breadth across platform and cloud engineering, custom software development, enterprise integration, and agentic AI solutions. 

• Strong engineering and delivery fundamentals: architecture trade-offs, delivery risk, operability, security - opinions built from having delivered enterprise-grade solutions into production. 

• A track record of driving AI-enabled ways of working at a team or practice level, not just personal productivity: championing adoption, setting standards, and understanding how people, processes, and tools are required for success. 

• Demonstrated ownership of client relationships - including identifying, shaping, and converting new work - with commercial fluency in engineering engagements: solutioning, estimating, scoping, resourcing, and technical delivery planning. 

• Experience operating in consulting or professional services.
