Job Description

Purpose of the role

To keep our customers, clients, and colleagues safe by identifying cyber-vulnerabilities across the Bank, using a risk-based approach to prioritise them, and to drive effective remediation activity. 

Accountabilities

• Allocation of the correct risk rating and remediation prioritisation to a vulnerability based on industry standards for assessment, available threat intelligence concerning exploitation, the reachability of the host (or asset) and the value of the service(s) running on the impacted host.
• Development of vulnerability management operating model, policies and procedures to ensure consistency in vulnerability identification, remediation and reporting. Element owner of the Vulnerability Management Standard including Issues Management and Regulatory alignment.
• Communication of vulnerabilities to relevant parties including senior stakeholders, vendors, external security partners and affect business units using reports and dashboards and provide recommendations for improvement in vulnerability management practices.
• Collaboration with Threat intelligence and Cyber Operations teams to assess and contextualise exposure to latest threat trends and exploits and set appropriate remediation timescales.
• Definition of requirements and acceptance criteria for the implementation and maintenance of automation tools to streamline vulnerability management processes within operating systems and applications.
• Reporting of remediation status of Security Assurance Specialist team findings against Key Risk Indicators.

Join us as a Vulnerability Management Ops SME and help Barclays better understand and address cyber security risks. This role is part of our cyber security function, where you will review vulnerability findings, consider their relevance across our technology environment, and support teams in addressing areas that may need attention. Your work will contribute to a secure, reliable, and trusted technology environment for our customers and colleagues.

Working closely with colleagues across Technology, Engineering, Infrastructure, and Cyber Security, you will review vulnerabilities highlighted through a variety of sources, including vulnerability scanning platforms, threat information, security research, penetration testing activities, vendor advisories, and vulnerability disclosure programmes. By bringing together technical information and business context, you will help colleagues understand security findings and support a shared understanding of appropriate actions.

Using information from a range of sources, including vulnerability data, exposure information and the wider cyber security landscape, you will help colleagues understand where attention may be beneficial and support a consistent approach to addressing vulnerabilities. You will also contribute to improvements through automation and data-informed approaches, helping to simplify ways of working, improve consistency and support positive outcomes across the organisation.

To be successful as a Vulnerability Management Ops SME, you must have the following essential skills:

• Experience working with vulnerability practices, including reviewing vulnerabilities, understanding their relevance, supporting remediation activities and helping organisations address potential cyber security risks.
• Experience using vulnerability tools such as Tenable, Qualys, Microsoft Defender, or similar platforms, together with the ability to review and interpret information from a variety of sources.
• Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and accessible way, helping different audiences understand findings and their potential implications.
• Ability to identify, assess, and coordinate the remediation of high-priority vulnerabilities across varied technology environments, drawing on threat intelligence, technical experience, collaborative partnership, and balanced risk assessment. This includes coordinating threat discovery activities, providing guidance on remediation approaches, working closely with senior stakeholders, and supporting the reduction of vulnerability exposure in line with agreed organisational risk thresholds.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

• Experience coordinating vulnerability activities, cyber security operations, threat exposure programmes, threat hunting, penetration testing, or related security practices.
• Knowledge of cloud security concepts across AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, together with familiarity with MITRE ATT&CK and common approaches used during cyber security incidents.
• Experience using automation, scripting, AI-assisted tools, or data-informed approaches to support vulnerability reviews, prioritisation activities and continuous improvement of day-to-day processes.
• You may be assessed on the key critical skills relevant for success in role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking and digital and technology, as well as job-specific technical skills.
