Newlands Closure has a site-based opportunity for an experienced Environment & Community Manager to join the team supporting Australia’s largest coal rehabilitation project. Operating as an extensive Open Cut Mine until February 2023, Newlands has now transitioned into rehabilitation and closure, with the goal of converting previously mined areas to sustainable post-mining land uses and progressing towards relinquishment.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership role during a significant phase of the Newlands Closure Project, providing strategic and operational leadership across environment, approvals, compliance and community engagement.

We are seeking a highly capable Environment & Community Manager to lead the site’s environmental and community functions, ensuring environmental obligations, regulatory requirements and stakeholder commitments are effectively managed throughout rehabilitation and closure.

Reporting to the Project Manager, you will be a key member of the site leadership team, working closely with operational, rehabilitation and technical functions to ensure closure activities are delivered responsibly, compliantly and in alignment with long-term closure objectives.

• Build and lead a high-performing team, setting clear expectations, priorities and accountability.
• Develop team capability through coaching, mentoring and performance management.
• Provide trusted environmental and community advice to the site leadership team.
• Foster strong collaboration across operational, rehabilitation, technical and corporate teams.

• Lead the implementation of environmental management systems, plans and compliance programs.
• Ensure site activities comply with environmental approvals, licences, legislation and company standards.
• Provide environmental oversight and advice for rehabilitation, closure and land management activities.
• Manage environmental monitoring, reporting, inspections, audits and assurance activities.
• Identify and manage environmental risks, incidents and emerging compliance requirements.
• Lead engagement with regulators and coordinate environmental reporting and approval requirements.
• Support progressive rehabilitation, closure planning and achievement of long-term relinquishment objectives.
• Drive continuous improvement in environmental performance, systems and processes.

• Lead the site’s community and stakeholder engagement activities throughout closure.
• Build and maintain constructive relationships with community members, landholders, government agencies, regulators and other key stakeholders.
• Manage community enquiries, commitments, complaints and engagement activities in a timely and professional manner.
• Support communication of rehabilitation and closure activities, milestones and future land-use outcomes.
• Identify emerging stakeholder and social risks and develop appropriate engagement strategies.

• Manage Environment & Community budgets, forecasts and cost performance.
• Develop and monitor environmental and community KPIs and provide accurate reporting to site and senior leadership.
• Manage consultants and contractors to ensure safety, quality, compliance and commercial expectations are achieved.
• Contribute environmental and stakeholder considerations to rehabilitation and closure planning and decision-making.
• Support strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives across the Newlands Closure Project.

You’re a confident and collaborative leader with strong environmental management experience, ideally within mining, resources or another highly regulated industry. You combine technical environmental knowledge with strong leadership, stakeholder engagement and commercial awareness.

You are comfortable working across both strategic and operational matters and can effectively engage with regulators, community stakeholders, technical specialists, operational teams and senior leaders.

• Proven experience in a senior environmental leadership or management role, preferably within the mining or resources industry.
• Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, regulatory requirements, approvals and compliance frameworks.
• Demonstrated experience managing environmental risks, monitoring, reporting, audits and assurance activities.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills with experience working with regulators, communities and other external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience leading and developing professional teams.
• Ability to influence operational and business decisions to achieve environmental and closure outcomes.
• Strong communication, problem-solving and decision-making capability.
• Experience managing budgets, consultants and contractors.
• Current Driver’s Licence.

• Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management or a related discipline.
• Experience within mine rehabilitation, closure and/or post-mining land-use planning.
• Knowledge of Queensland mining and environmental regulatory frameworks.
• Experience with environmental approvals, Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plans (PRCPs) and rehabilitation compliance.
• Experience managing community and stakeholder engagement within the resources sector.
