Software Engineer Specialist

The Role
As a Software Engineer Specialist reporting to the Director - Software Engineering, you'll play a critical role in building and maintaining the technology platforms that power Nasdaq's market operations. You'll own the development and reliability of a complex, high-performance client-server web platform that supports real-time financial activity and exchange operations at scale.

Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and web applications using Java and modern web technologies.
Lead architectural decisions and code reviews to ensure secure, high-quality, and high-performance software delivery.
Build and optimize client-server applications that support real-time market data processing, transaction workflows, and exchange operations.
Collaborate with infrastructure, DevOps, and QA teams to ensure reliable integration, deployment, and support across Linux-based environments.
Troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement long-term solutions to improve system reliability, scalability, and performance.
Maintain technical documentation and ensure adherence to industry standards, security best practices, and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of software engineering experience developing enterprise-scale applications using Java, SQL, and modern software engineering principles.
Experience building and supporting web-based applications using React (or similar frameworks) within Linux-based environments.
Strong understanding of client-server architectures, API development, system integration, multi-threaded programming, and performance optimization.
Proven ability to build, deploy, and support secure, scalable, and high-performing systems while collaborating across cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in capital markets, trading systems, fintech, or other regulated financial environments.
Familiarity with real-time data processing, event-driven architectures, low-latency systems, and market connectivity protocols such as FIX.
Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, and system monitoring or observability tools.
Knowledge of secure software development practices, regulatory compliance requirements, and production support in mission-critical environments.
This position will be located in New York and offers the opportunity for a hybrid work environment at least 3 days a week in-office, subject to change, providing flexibility and accessibility for qualified candidates.

The base pay range for this role is $86,000 - $146,000. In addition to base salary, Nasdaq provides a generous annual bonus/commission (short-term incentive), and equity (long-term incentive), comprehensive benefits, and opportunity for growth.
