Chief Underwriting Officer, General Insurance

Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the underwriting strategy aligned with the company's overall business objectives.
- Define local underwriting policies that align with Group standards, ensuring consistency across markets/channels.
- Lead the technical underwriting team in daily referral decisions, underwriting governance, and risk assessment.
- Provide expert guidance on complex underwriting issues and risk selection.
- Establish and maintain robust underwriting governance frameworks.
- Monitor underwriting performance in collaboration with Finance, Reserving, and Risk Management teams.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the review and approval process for high-value or complex risks.
- Oversee the pricing actuarial team to ensure accurate, competitive, and profitable pricing models.
- Collaborate with actuaries to develop and refine pricing strategies, pricing tools and reserve adequacy.
- Support underwriting decisions with sound actuarial analysis.
- Guide the product development team in designing innovative insurance products that meet market needs and align with underwriting criteria.
- Assess new product risks and embed proper underwriting controls.
- Lead the reinsurance team in structuring reinsurance programs to optimize risk transfer and capital efficiency.
- Provide guidance and technical support to the AIRE & AHK General Insurance Reinsurance Hub.
- Negotiate reinsurance treaties and manage relationships with reinsurers.
- Work closely with senior management, finance, reserving, risk management, and distribution teams to ensure strategic alignment.
- Represent underwriting perspectives in strategic planning and decision-making.
- Build and develop high-performing underwriting and actuarial teams.
- Promote a strong risk management culture and continuous professional development.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in senior underwriting roles within the general insurance industry, preferably with experience in Hong Kong or Asian markets.
- Strong understanding of underwriting practices, pricing, product development, reinsurance, and portfolio monitoring.
- Leadership skills with the ability to influence and drive change.
- Analytical mindset with a focus on risk assessment and strategic planning.
- Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., ACII, FCAS, or equivalent) are preferred.
