Assurance is a Second line defence function established under a delegated Mandate from the Group Chief Risk Officer and the Group Head of Conduct, Financial Crime and Compliance (CFCR). The primary role of Assurance is to provide a risk-based independent view to Senior Management in the business/functions, Second Line and the Board as to the effectiveness of the bank’s policies, processes, systems and controls. It facilitates identification of any gaps & inefficiencies, enabling prompt corrective action to be taken, and is a key source of evidence for the Board & Regulators. Assurance is part of the reasonable steps taken in support of SMF 4, 16 & 17 responsibilities.
The Director, FC Assurance role reports into the Head of Financial Crime (FC) Assurance and operates within a globally integrated and fungible operating model, working closely with others in the CFCR Assurance team to focus on delivery of Assurance reviews within the FC Assurance remit.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development and execution of a risk-based, data-driven Financial Crime Assurance strategy aligned with the Bank’s risk profile and regulatory expectations.
- Help assess the effectiveness of risk management frameworks, controls, and oversight activities across businesses, functions, and regions.
- Review and test the design and operating effectiveness of key controls across financial crime risk processes.
- Support assurance activities focused on the highest-risk areas and emerging themes across the organisation.
- Monitor delivery of the Financial Crime Assurance plan and ensure alignment with strategic priorities.
- Maintain high quality standards across assurance planning, testing, reporting, and issue validation.
- Build strong working relationships with stakeholders across Risk, Compliance, Business, and Control functions.
- Provide clear reporting on control weaknesses, testing results, and remediation progress to senior stakeholders.
- Track and validate remediation actions to ensure issues are addressed effectively and sustainably.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of assurance methodologies, documentation standards, and reporting practices.
- Stay informed on regulatory developments, industry best practices, and internal policies related to financial crime risk management and assurance.
- Promote a strong culture of risk awareness, integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct across all activities.
Skills and Experience
- Strong assurance, risk and control testing, regulatory inspection or audit experience in Risk, Compliance and Financial Crime within a banking environment.
- Experience leading and performing ABC/Fraud reviews
- Experience interpreting regulatory rules applicable with Financial Crimes lens
- Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) Preferred
- Comprehensive knowledge of banking and investment product across client segments
- Previous audit or assurance experience with minimum of 5 years
- Substantial experience in the banking industry, including demonstrated success in a similar roles, including across a range of risk areas.
- Experience in leading transformations in risk and control testing/audit/assurance.
- Experience in optimising processes, including via the use of technology.
- Strong leadership qualities, excellent interpersonal skills and personal authority based on trusted relationships.
- Experienced in building leading and motivating teams.
- Strategic vision for the function.
- Excellent communicator, effective leader and manager of complex, highly matrixed organizations and the ability to explain complex risk terms in business language.
- Ability to collaborate and work dynamically across country, region, business, and group stakeholders
- Strong drive, high levels of integrity, independence, and enthusiasm.
- Strong expertise in data analytics, AI, automation, and technology risk management in banking.
- Strong presentation skills and the overall knowledge, sound judgement and courage of conviction.
