Job Summary
• Manage the Product control function for China across Business
• Provide strong oversight of the integrity, accuracy and timely reporting of China trading revenues, balance sheet positions and valuation adjustments, ensuring that financial results are appropriately controlled and understood.
• Establish and maintain a China-specific Product Control and Valuation Control framework that meets local regulatory requirements while remaining aligned with the bank’s global policies, standards and risk appetite.
• Partner with Front Office, Risk, Finance and Operations to support sustainable business growth by providing independent challenge, identifying emerging financial and valuation risks, and enabling informed commercial decision-making.
• Strengthen the local control environment through effective governance, clear ownership, high-quality management information and the development of capable China-based Product Control and Valuation Control resources.
• Manage the Valuation Control deliverables as applicable for China regulatory requirements
Key Responsibilities
• Lead a China-based Product Control and Valuation Control team, while also acting as a hands-on subject matter expert. The role combines people leadership with significant individual contribution, particularly in resolving complex control, valuation, accounting and regulatory matters.
• Oversee the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of daily and monthly P&L, balance sheet substantiation, valuation adjustments, independent price verification and other core Product Control and Valuation Control activities for the China business.
• Establish and maintain an effective China-specific control framework that meets local regulatory expectations and is aligned with the bank’s global Product Control and Valuation Control policies, methodologies and governance standards.
• Coordinate extensively with global and regional Product Control and Valuation Control teams to obtain technical input, clarify policy requirements, resolve methodology differences and ensure consistent application of global standards within the China business.
• Provide independent review and challenge of trading results, valuation methodologies, reserves, model inputs, adjustments and balance sheet positions. Ensure material issues are identified, investigated, escalated and resolved within agreed timelines.
• Partner with Front Office, Risk, Finance, Operations, Treasury, Compliance and Technology to support new products, business growth and regulatory initiatives, ensuring that appropriate financial controls and valuation processes are in place before implementation.
• Support the China business by providing clear analysis of revenue performance, valuation uncertainty, balance sheet risks, control weaknesses and emerging issues, enabling informed management and commercial decision-making.
• Manage regulatory and internal stakeholder requirements, including preparation of management information, responses to regulatory enquiries, audit support, remediation plans and evidence of sustainable control improvements.
• Allocate work, set priorities, review outputs and develop the capability of the local team. Ensure clear accountability, appropriate segregation of duties, adequate documentation and effective backup arrangements.
• Drive improvements in processes, reporting, data quality and automation, reducing manual adjustments and recurring breaks while improving the transparency, efficiency and resilience of the control environment.
• Maintain effective governance over material issues, exceptions and control breaches, with clear ownership, action plans, escalation thresholds and reporting to relevant China, regional and global committees.
• The role holder is accountable for both the day-to-day effectiveness of the local Product Control and Valuation Control function and the successful coordination of China requirements with the wider global control organisation.
