Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services. This post is in the Arabic Interpretation Unit, Interpretation Section, Division of Conference Services, UNON. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Section. Within delegated authority, the Senior Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:

Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required. A master’s degree is desirable. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Job - Specific Qualification

For this position, passing the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Interpreters is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten (10) years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations, of which at least five (5) years working within the United Nations system or similar international organization is required. Five (5) years of relevant managerial experience in a language related area within the UN System or in similar international organization is desirable. Relevant language experience within the UN System or in similar international organization is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English and French are required. Arabic is required. This is a language position. This post is for an initial period of one year. The extension of appointment is subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
