Senior Backup Engineer – Join Standard Chartered’s Global Storage & Backup team in Kuala Lumpur.
Lead backup architecture, automation, and compliance across global banking platforms.
Job Summary
The candidate will be a member of the Global Storage & Backup team, specialising in the Backup domain at Standard Chartered Bank. It will be an engineering role working alongside members of a team geographically dispersed, that will focus on building, deploying and supporting Backup technologies globally across the bank, taking into consideration all available technologies and business requirements. Experience in the global banking industry is welcomed but not mandatory.
Processes
- • Ensure the team always follows operational best practices. Ensure the highest levels of ownership, accountability and service are maintained within the team.
- • Review, uphold and enforce all Bank technical, security, quality, and engineering standards on supported assets.
- • Ensure compliance with Bank ITSM processes such as Incident, Change and Problem Management.
- • Identify and implement service improvements that will include, but not be limited to, improving service level delivery; remediating process gaps; using automation to reduce turnaround times; improving the customer experience; reducing cost; improving risk exposure; and optimising the monitoring infrastructure.
- • Perform periodic capacity and performance reporting of the backup storage infrastructure, and present key findings and recommendations.
Risk Management
- • Proactively identify risks and issues or react to them in a timely manner to minimise any potential impact. Create and implement remediate plans to resolve any non-compliance.
- • Support auditory, regulatory and risk and compliance initiatives that contain deliverables related to the storage and backup service.

Other Responsibilities
- • Backup engineer with In-depth experience in managing heterogeneous backup environment
- • Comfortable serving as a technical lead and being accountable for initiatives and projects.
- • Experience with global backup environments is required, especially in countries/regions such as experience with Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
- • Act as a backup subject matter expert, providing strong guidance and direction in all aspects of backup design and support, asserting one’s technical authority to reach successful outcomes.
- • In-depth technical knowledge of backup and the Cohesity, Veritas, Arc Serve and Data Domain product suite and technologies. The bank’s strategic direction is Cohesity
- • Work with the teams to streamline and automate the ability to add, remove and manage backup servers and clients
- • Ability to work with vendors to test solutions and fix bugs. Experiencing migrating across different backup products is a plus
- • Work with audit, risk and application teams on data restoration and recovery
- • Understanding of securing and making the backup infrastructure resilient and immutable
- • Ensure the global backup estate is available, performant, stable and resilient, and delivers to expected service levels.
- • Harness automation technologies wherever possible to simplify and increase efficiencies.
- • Work closely with peers in the Storage and Backup Team to engineer solutions, develop designs, new products, standards and roadmaps.
- • Knowledge of security scanning technologies
- • Understanding of the concept of a third backup site / data bunker designs, along with the recovery of systems in this site
- • Deploy, build, test and integrate new assets into production, complying with the Bank’s procedural, technical and security standards.
- • Participate in data migrations, demonstrating a sound awareness of the migration flow, prerequisites and dependencies, testing, success criteria and risk mitigation. Deliver successful migrations with zero incidents.
- • Exercise advanced troubleshooting skills when responding to incidents, including major incidents and escalations; act as the incident situation-lead to lead collaborative efforts to successful resolution.
- • Participate in the on-call rota for escalations and major incidents.
